Padma Shri Award

This year’s Civilian award Padmashri in India has included Prof. Prokar Dasgupta based at King’s Health Partners where he is the Professor of Surgery and Urology.

Professor Dasgupta was the first to become the Professor of Robotic Surgery at the prestigious King’s College London. In 2005 he was involved with a team who used robotic surgery to retrieve a kidney for kidney transplantation.

He has researched bladder problems where people lose the control of the bladder( incontinence) by injecting Botox into the bladder wall which has come to be known as the ” Dasgupta technique”.

A prolific researcher, Dasgupta has published more than 800 peer reviewed papers.

In 2020 he completed nearly a decade as Editor-in-Chief of a 90-year old journal, the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) after transforming it into one of the most read surgical journals on the web.

The standards of selection for the Padma awards have certainly gone higher considering the profile of the awardees.
